The GOP Dirty Tricks

Everything you need to know and were afraid to ask about the dirtiest players around… the GOP. The conservative lies and dirty tricks.

The Politics of Hate Today, more than 800 hate groups prosper in the United States according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. According to the government and law enforcement agencies, hate groups are continuing resurgence, since the election of President Barack Obama.

This “second wave” can be attributed to the mood created by those who attend “tea parties”. Tea parties {lead and sponsored by corporations (Koch brothers) and subsidized by taxpayer dollars} consist of bewildered conservatives and republicans who huddle and plot against Mr. Obama and his agenda. At tea parties, one must wonder if they are searching for collapse of our nation, seeking reassurance or asking forgiveness for the wrath of their movement’s sins and failed economic (trickle down economics) and financial policies. What better than attacking the government and damning Liberals over a cup of tea?

The tea party movement materialized as a force that impacted the 2010 midterm election, more importantly it has sown seeds of doubt in relations to Americans trust in our government. The main target of this movement is Mr. Obama. As reported by the Southern Poverty Law Center, last year, outside Atlanta, a so-called “American Grand Jury” issues an “indictment” of Barack Obama for fraud and treason because, the panel concludes, he wasn’t born in the United States and is illegally occupying the office of president. Other anti-Obama “grand juries” around the country sprout.

This harvest of hate has produced a more dangerous brand of hate groups. Anti-government groups are becoming more dangerous as they morph into a growing force with more targeted membership drives. The Oath Keepers are one of these more dangerous groups. This organization was born in Lexington, Massachusetts and lead by founder Stewart Rhodes, a retired FBI agent.

The US Map of Hate – Number of Hate Groups per State
This new militia/hate movement is directed squarely at the federal government – the new face of the primary enemy of freedom of the extreme right – is now black. The election of President Obama has injected a new level of hatred and racism into the extreme right, like militias who were not motivated by racism in the past. A contributing factor to this new fueled racial tension and hatred is the immigration of Latino’s.

Spin off Oath Keeper groups are springing up across the county. No one knows how large this group is but the largest of which is located in the dessert outside of Las Vegas, NV. The danger of this group is that they are targeting government employees (veterans, police officers, law enforcement agency members from state and federal governments and active military personnel) in membership drives.

This new militia rhetoric is being heard and believed more widely, normally by a new generation of Republican/conservative ideologues who spread deception, conspiracy theories and fear to undermine the agenda of Mr. Obama. The problem is so feared by authorities that the government has set up special efforts to rein in the “tax defiers” and track open threats against government officials, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Only recently, in its ever-growing desires to distort the facts, Fox news continues its lies on President Obama.

This second wave of extremism has many authorities worried. Militiamen, white supremacists, tea party toddlers, tax protesters and a host of other activists of the radical right are mutating and coalescing. What is more disturbing is the fact that the Foxmania of lies and deception continues spreading the extremist view, attempting to inject its poison into the mainstream media.

The ultimate fears consist of the potential threat to the chain-of-command of the military and/or government. Oath Keepers members vow to fulfill the oaths to the Constitution that they swore while in the military or law enforcement. “Our oath is to the Constitution, not to the politicians, and we will not obey what we consider unconstitutional (and thus illegal) and immoral orders,” the group says. Oath Keepers lists 10 orders its members won’t obey.

In the worse case scenario, the US is involved in a war or national emergency and government employees (police, law makers, military, etc.) who are also Oath Keeper members refuse to carry out government commands to address the threat to the nation. The chain of command collapses and chaos results. All that remains is a spark that will ignite this chaos and violence.

GOP ATTEMPTS TO SUPPRESS VOTING RIGHTS There is an attack on the right to vote underway across the country through laws (like Tennessee’s Voter ID law) designed to make it more difficult to cast a ballot. If this were happening in a fledgling democracy, we’d condemn it as election-rigging. But it’s happening America, and there’s barely any notice .

Sadly, these laws are being passed in the name of preventing “voter fraud.” It is no accident that these laws are only being enacted in states where republicans gained control of state governments. In a democracy, the electorate picks the politicians. After this past election, republican politicians are attempting to shape their electorates. After this law passed, these same legislators closed many of the locations across the state where ID photos could be made, making it more difficult for affected groups to get a new ID made. Voter fraud is less of a problem than how difficult republicans are attempting to make voting.

The greatest impact of this new law will affect senior citizens, college students, blacks, Hispanics and the poor. All of which are groups which republicans feel view them less favorability. This summer, in west Tennessee, seniors and poor stood in long lines for hours, in heat over 100 degrees, to have an ID made. Many had to travel long distances to a location where an “official” ID could be made.

You can vote with a Tennessee gun permit but not a college ID? Can you say voter suppression, poll taxes or Jim Crow?

The map below deplicts the states in red that have adopted new restrictive voting requirements.

If you can’t win a race~ suppress turnout. Its less than a year before the 2012 presidential voting begins and Republican state legislatures and governors across the country are rewriting voting laws to make it much harder for the young, the old, the poor and African-Americans (groups that historically vote Democratic) to cast a vote.

Once again, Republicans use fear, to spread the notion of nonexistent voter fraud, Republicans are requiring citizens show a government-issued identification before they are allowed to vote. This is the largest legislative effort to scale back voting rights in a century. These new laws will make Jim Crow supporters proud and those who remember poll taxes and civil rights battles cringe over restricting to voting rights.

Stand in line at a motor vehicle office and you quickly learn how difficult and time consuming it is to get photo IDs. Recently, in Tennessee, many of these offices have been closed. For working people, it could mean giving up a day’s wages to acquire the right to vote. How many people can afford to do that in this dismal economy… and Republicans know this all to well.

A survey by the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law found that 11 percent of citizens, 21 million people, do not have a current photo ID, many of these people are senior citizens. That fraction increases to 15 percent of low-income voting-age citizens, 18 percent of young eligible voters and 25 percent of black eligible voters. Those demographic groups tend to vote Democratic, and Republicans are imposing requirements that they know many will be unable to meet.

Voter ID law = Jim Crow + Poll Tax Is voter fraud a problem in Tennessee? Fortunately, Republican claims of voter fraud in Tennessee are false with one recent glaring exception.

Black voters were told to get behind the white voters. Black voters were told to remove NAACP stickers from their cars or leave the polling place without voting. Black voters were intimidated by police standing around polling places. Black voters stood in lines over a mile long to use ancient punch-card machines that frequently broke down. In poor districts, they’d stand as long as six hours to vote. When they complained, the police were called in. One would think these are examples of civil rights violations from the Deep South fifty years ago.

No, it happened in November 2000. And no, these example were not in Florida, they happened in Tennessee. No one talked much about this rare but recent example of voter problems in this state.

Some of the glaring examples of voter suppression during the election of 2000 are as follows: Black Nashville college students were not permitted to vote even though they were registered. Missing pages from election rosters occurred all over Nashville and in primarily black and/or poor precincts. Election office workers harass black citizens who requested voter registration forms. It’s the obvious things, such as the fact that polling places in West Tennessee opened one to two hours late, or did not open at all, new polling places that opened, unannounced to voters, and this occurred only in areas that were made up of black, college students, and/or poor.

The strangest example of voter problems in 2000 is the way that certain voting precincts all over the state had the wrong type of old voting machines. That’s what caused the mile-long lines in districts like Hadley Park and Upper Antioch. The really odd part is, all these districts seem to have been, once again, seniors, black, Hispanic, college students and/or the poor.

Sadly, the new voter ID law will target the same folks who were discriminated against in the 2000 Presidential Elections, once again, the black, Hispanic, seniors, college students and/or poor. The new voter ID law is the new Jim Crow and new Poll Tax.

THOSE WHO STRIVE TO DESTROY SOCIAL BENEFITS If you want to know why we may lose parts of Medicare and Medicaid, parts of Social Security, parts of the Environmental Protection Act, more jobs, protection for workers and the elderly, support for public education, and so many other qualities of life that have been fought for and won over the decades by Democrats, look at the list of names below. These are the right wing “patriots” who have captured the Republican Party, made its leadership into cowards, and all but destroyed the “full faith and credit” of the United States by their ABSOLUTE REFUSAL to even discuss reasonable solutions to the tax code.
